Menendez acknowledged and thanked Estonia for its participation in international military operations and said that President Obama´s visit is a positive recognition for Estonia as a successful country.

The Defence Minister thanked Senator Menendez for the quick US response in reassuring Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland in light of the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

"If the unstable security situation persists, it is in our interests to have the continuing US military presence in Estonia, Mikser said.

"Russian aggression is destabilising Ukraine and creating instability throughout Eastern Europe, the Baltic states, and in other neighbouring countries," Menendez said in his statement.

"These actions are causing serious national security implications for Estonia, Poland, and Ukraine. The United States, alongside our European allies, will not allow the international order to be upended by President Putin and his Russian-allied separatist militias who shot down a civilian airline, taking the lives of 298 innocent people in Eastern Ukraine."

Senator Menendez also met with Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas, to discuss the security on national, as well as on the European level.

While discussing the upcoming NATO Summit in Wales, the Prime Minister said that Estonia wants to reach an agreement on increasing the presence of the NATO allies and developing the necessary military capabilities that would ensure the rapid response of the allies if necessary.

In regards to Europe, Prime Minister Rõivas pointed out that European security would be strengthened by investments in energy independence, and free trade agreement with the United States.

"European security situation would change significantly if its dependence on Russian gas would be reduced," Rõivas said.

Senator Menendez will also meet with members of 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team of the US Army who have been deployed to Estonia, as well as pilots from the NATO Baltic Air Patrol mission.
